The Will of RICHARD HEAD, Yeoman of Thame, Oxfordshire. Proved at London, 1788 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

Reference: (TNA) PROB 11/1043

In the name of God Amen. I Richard Head of North Weston in the Parish of Thame in the County of Oxford Yeoman being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding do make publish and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say First I give and devise unto my daughter Mary the now wife of Andrew Holt all that ground with the appurtenances situate and being in the parish of Grendon Underwood in the County of Buckingham which I purchased of Sir William Gilbert and Thomas Day to hold the same unto my daughter Mary Holt and to her heirs forever. All the rest of my freehold estate with the appurtenances situate and being in the parish of Grendon Underwood aforesaid and also all that my freehold estate with the appurtenances situate in the parish of Peasemore in the County of Berks I hereby give and devise unto my loving wife Mary Head for and during the term of her natural life she not committing or suffering any waste or destruction thereon And from and immediately after her decease I hereby give and devise the same unto my son John Head for and during the term of his natural life he not committing or suffering any waste or destruction thereon And from and immediately after his decease I hereby give and devise the same unto the lawful issue of my said son John Head forever but in case my said son John Head should die without leaving any issue of his body lawfully begotten I hereby give and devise the same estate unto and amongst my four daughters – namely Esther Wyatt widow the aforementioned Mary Holt Ann the wife of Henry Reynolds and Elizabeth the wife of William Winter to hold the same into them my said four daughters equally share and share alike and to their heirs and assigns forever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants. I hereby give and bequeath unto my said daughter Esther Wyatt the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid her within twelve months after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Mary Holt the sum of five pounds to buy her mourning Also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Ann Reynolds the sum of three hundred pounds to be paid her within twelve months after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth Winter the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid her within twelve months after my decease All the rest and residue of my goods chattels estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I hereby give devise and bequeath unto my said wife Mary Head And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said wife Mary Head and her brother Thomas Couzens joint executors of this my will desiring them to pay and discharge all my just debts legacies and funeral expenses In testimony that this is my last will and testament I hereby revoke all former wills and have hereunto set my hand and seal he twenty fourth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven. Signed sealed published and declared by the said Richard Head the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto Edwd Hedges John WebsterJas Way.

This will was proved at London the sixth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight before the Right Worshipful Sir George Way Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Mary Head the relict of the deceased and Thomas Couzens the executors named in the said will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased having been sworn by Commission duly to administer.
